The season is over. You won.
Contributor: The Nerd A few years ago, my daughter called in a panic to report that her parked car had been hit while she was at a friend’s house. The friend’s mother had hit our car when she was backing out of her garage, not expecting a car to be blocking her path so late at night. The mother was apologetic, and quickly offered to pay for any body shop repairs. We politely declined her offer. At the time, my daughter drove a 2001 Buick Century. It had a golf-ball sized hol

Contributor: The Nerd This is it. This is State week. We've reached that point in the season where we're fresh out of witty ideas, so we'll just stick with the facts in this Nerdsletter. Our goal is to better prepare you for the awesome spectacle at Burke so that you're invested in all four days as much as we are. If you need a little inspiration, we recommend reading one of our all-time favorites, 'No Room for Fear or Doubt.' NSAA website The NSAA website is the source f

Contributor: The Nerd With District meets starting on Tuesday, we're publishing this week's Nerdsletter early to make sure you're in the know. Leave no room for fear or doubt For many athletes, this week can be an exhaustive tour through self-doubt, anxiety and fear. We know that athletes perform best when they are confident, and that's the reason we wrote this article years ago. If your athlete is struggling with performance anxiety, pass along this article to them. How t

2026 State qualifying process
Contributor: The Nerd Each year there is considerable confusion among new varsity athletes and their parents about how athletes qualify for the Nebraska State track meet. In general, twenty-four (24) athletes qualify for individual events and sixteen (16) teams qualify in relays, but there are a number of caveats to those numbers. Here's a not-succinct summary. Class A In Class A there are FOUR district meets, and the top four athletes in each of the 14 individual events are

Contributor: The Nerd The wall Speaking for most of the Nerds, we've reached that point in the season where the sheer volume of meets and unedited photos is overwhelming the amount of time we have to devote to Nerding. Spouses, children and bosses are starting to complain about our lack of attention. I've got 10,000 photos from Saturday's Centennial meet to edit or delete, so this week's Nerdsletter will be a quick one. Sport parents, play your role With just over two week

Contributor: The Nerd 3rd. Fastest. Ever. Berlyn Schutz at 2023 State track meet This past weekend, in a field of mostly professional runners at the Drake Relays, UNL's Berlyn Schutz ran the mile in 4:27.30 to finish third. According to the UNL athletic department, this is the third fastest outdoor mile ever recorded by an NCAA female athlete. Cody Brousek of UNL referred me to the USTFCCA list, which reflects the top five all-time performers as: Silan Ayyildiz, Oregon (

If you haven't visited national parks, here are a few tips: Stay in shape as you get older. I saw far too many adults who couldn't fully enjoy the parks because they weren't fit enough. Go in the offseason. If you avoid out-of-school times, national parks ar

Contributor: The Nerd New State records (*pending) Last week was a bit quiet on the record front with dicey weather cancelling a few meets and high winds negating chances for records in sprints and jumps. The Knox County invite featured the only potential records of the week, both by Crofton freshman Avery Arens. The meet results posted on our site at this link reflect that Avery posted times of 5:00.00 (1600) and 10:51.65 (3200) at the meet, which are faster than the exi

Contributor: The Nerd Louie Fritz, RIP Running mentors come in many forms. Nerd Junior's first two mentors were his junior high coaches; one focused on celebrating the joy of running while the other kept whispering 'you can be great'. Junior was a mentor to his younger brother, and they both benefitted from the guidance of older teammates once they were in high school. As I've become more familiar with the Omaha post-grad running scene, it's been fun to watch experienced

Contributor: The Nerd It takes us a while to get into Nerdsletter shape each season, but we'll do our best to keep you informed. A groundbreaking change We noticed over the weekend that athletic.net has converted from PR (personal record) to PB (personal best). In the past PR was more commonly used by high school athletes while PB was a college thing, but apparently athletic.net has decided that SB (season best) and PB are the terms we're supposed to use. Kaser Johnson, grit and gold
Contributor: Alex Madsen, Falls City Sacred Heart A lanky figure cuts through the frigid winter front like a dagger. The December winds almost drown out the constant pounding of his shoes slapping against the concrete. If the 20-mile-per-hour wind and freezing temperatures weren’t already enough of a challenge, the teenager doesn't start his nightly run until after his basketball practice ends. The bitter cold doesn't seem to bother him. Kaser Johnson is focused on adding t
